BCM ASSISTS WITH DAM REMOVAL PROJECT
BCM Environmental & Land Law, PLLC, is working with clients Gosport Properties, LLC, and Keeper Striper Properties, LLC, to remove two obsolete dams from the Cocheco River in Rochester, New Hampshire’s Gonic Village. The dams are the known as the Gonic Dam and the Gonic Sawmill Dam. The City of Rochester helped BCM’s clients procure a $150,000 Critical Flood Risk Infrastructure Grant to help pay for the engineering and permitting of the dam removal project. Additional grant funding is expected from other sources to remove the dams and approximately 4,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment. Without action, these dams will eventually fail, posing threats to water quality and aquatic habitat downstream. Removal of these dams would eliminate these significant risks and would restore 12.8 miles of free-flowing river, leading to improved water quality, natural sediment transport/nutrient flow, flood resilience, shoreland stabilization, and habitat connectivity.
